condé nast traveler: herb & sea cuisine “blends east coast vibes and california breeziness”

Condé Nast Traveler, a luxury and lifestyle travel magazine, features a review of Herb & Sea and says the restaurant “blends East Coast vibes and California breeziness.”

Focusing on the dinner menu, review writer Archana Ram describes the food as:

“..simple, clean, bright seafood… The menu is divided into oysters, clams, salads, small and large plates, pasta, and pizza in case fruits de mer isn't your thing.”

Ram then highlights the roasted oysters with bone marrow, “a riff on Oysters Rockefeller that subs in lighter ingredients like kale and lemon so the decadent marrow can shine.”

Executive Pastry Chef Adrian Mendoza’s dishes are flavorful, especially the butterscotch budino with lavender cream which Ram suggests to be a definite dessert to look out for. Aside from the food, Ram also recommends what to drink-- cocktails. The drink menu was classified as “seasonal and light, with citrus and floral notes emphasized.”

Noting Encinitas’ love for agave, Ram notices the incorporation of tequila and mezcal to the majority of the menu. She recognizes the tandem of Executive Chef-partner Sara Harris and Bar Lead Connor Duncan in ordering the same ingredients for the food and drinks.

The efforts of partner-owners Chris Puffer and Brian Malarkey are commendable, both of whom are known for their grand restaurants.

Additionally, the work of Bells + Whistles (Jeune et Jolie, Campfire) on the building’s design and aesthetic are worthy of recognition. Having the 1920s Art Deco theme, the building boasts of “splashes of turquoise paired with neutrals, an impressive open kitchen, and an ocean aesthetic without kitsch…. The name pays homage not just to the cuisine but to its location steps from the beach in surf-happy Encinitas.”

A balanced mix of traditional culinary practices and modern California, Herb & Sea is a diverse place filled with eclectic elements. Herb & Sea aims to serve patrons food that makes them feel the warmth of home.

Being a luxury and lifestyle travel magazine, Condé Nast Traveler knows a thing or two about good food and where to find them. You can count on this magazine to give you the rundown on all things lifestyle, from an honest review of Herbs & Sea to a family travel guide.
