san diego tribune: herb & sea serves one of the best pizzas in san diego

Trusted metropolitan daily newspaper The San Diego Union-Tribune says Herb & Sea, along with Herb & Wood, have one of the best pizzas in town in their article Anyway you slice it, San Diego is a great pizza town — here are the Top 10 pies.

Herb & Sea, and sister restaurant Herb & Wood, piqued writer Michele Parente’s interest. “No matter how many times I’ve eaten at Herb & Wood, I would never consider skipping a pizza to share at dinner. It’s that good,” Parente writes.

Recounting her Sunday brunch, Parente specially mentions the Salmon Lox pie, saying it’s “San Diego’s best brunch pizza.”

“The Salmon Lox pie is essentially a delightfully highfalutin New York bagel, if you imagine a bagel that had a cracklingly thin crust and was minus the hole.”

She goes on to say what pairs best with the dish. “Schmeared with classy crème fraîche and topped with delicate, smoky salmon, everything spice, red onion, capers, sieved egg, and pops of trout roe, San Diego’s best brunch pizza is a glass of Champagne’s best accompaniment.”

Parente says that the pies get “a gourmet makeover at Brian Malarkey’s popular Little Italy and Encinitas eateries.”

She also praises the skill in making these pizzas and the quality of the ingredients being used. “Woodfired pizzas are skillfully created using the same first-class ingredients that go in the other dishes, from duck confit to Spanish chorizo, Basque idiazábal cheese to prosciutto and Sicilian Castelvetrano olives.”

A fusion of culinary traditions and modern Californian sensibility, Herb & Sea is a collection of diverse and eclectic elements that feed its customers and make them feel welcome and home. From pasta and pizza to roasted vegetables and fresh seafood, Executive Chef Sara Harris’s menu is bold and playful.
